I started to make box #3 last night and I had a thought:o

Is there a design rule for the depth of a box in relevance to the width??
Or is there a golden rule to the depth of the box on its own i.e. you should be able touch the bottom with your hand???

One rule I can think of - the box should not be deeper inside then the length of the outside...

No rules !:D (I think if its deeper on the inside than the outside its called a bangle.:D ) I reckon all rules have an exception anyway. The next challenge is going to be "Make the ugliest thing ". Its kinda of impossible cos after you've considered every detail and chosen the one you hate best you can't hate it.

No rules !:D (I think if its deeper on the inside than the outside its called a bangle.:D )If it is tapered it could be a funnel :D

That should be an easy one for me I will just make a self portrait (after a bottle of rum):C:D
I realise that all rules are made to be broken but I just thought there might have been a rule of thumb:dunno:

No rules !:D (I think if its deeper on the inside than the outside its called a bangle.:D )

And if it's wider inside than the diameter, it's called a coaster :D

Cheers,
Dave

Rule of thumb-..... Don't stick your thumb in front of sharp things.:D

2nd rule of thumb. Don't rule with your thumb unless it is straight.:elefant:

Said that already.:D See post three above.:cl::bleh:

Kinda serious answer? The design of the object must fit the purpose it is intended for. Work out the purpose and you are half way there.

If I'd known we were allowed serious answers I'd have replied earlier :D

There is a proportion that is supposed to be pleasing to the eye which is known as the Golden Ratio and is about 1.6. Supposedly if your box is 1.6 as wide as high (or the other way round) it has a good start!

You can read more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio

I'm sure Tea Lady and Eliza have forgotten more about the Golden Ratio than I'll ever know about it but they's too busy wise crackin' :;

Thanks KDM that is what I was looking for so if I understand it correctly. if my box is 10 mm wide then it should 16 mm deep.

Oh I love all the other golden rules of thumb but I have one more

Confuses said man how go to bed with itchy bum wake with smelly finger:B:doh::q:U

So, the next box is miniature is it? :D

I've never actually got the ruler out to measure whether I'm conforming to the "golden rule" or not.

Art theory should be treated like any other theory. ;)

But the golden mean is a pleasing proportion, (I wish this had spell check) so you could use it - remember, it doesn't have to be in one direction only. And it really only applies to the visual appeal of the box - the outside lookyness of it.

As TL says - what the purpose of the box is for.. A biccie barrel is going to be a much different shape to one of KenW's boxes, but at least you can fit biscuits in it :)
