Putting it together

I tried to do another goblet box putting everything that I've learnt together. Still needs work, but thanks to all the help here I think I have the guist of it now!

The wood is a piece that Vern sent me, one of the scented woods, I think Rose Mahogany? Rose something. The red dust went everywhere and I was surprised when I polished it that it went so dark. I was going to put a black finial on it, but when I saw how dark it was I picked up a light piece of dead finished (why is it called that?)

The only thing I learnt that I didn't put into this box is lining up the grain. There wasn't any really, nothing obvious. I would have liked to make the stem of the goblet finer, but the RM was so soft I wasn't going to chance it. Next time when I use a harder wood.

You did very well in your turning the finial is something I have to work hard at to get it so fine hand just some days just don't. Now warmer weather is here I'll be trying as often as I can.

You did very well in your turning the finial is something I have to work hard at to get it so fine hand just some days just don't. Now warmer weather is here I'll be trying as often as I can.

The Dead Finish (must be just the sapwood you used there) got it's name from the original occupants out here who claimed that "When this tree die, this country he dead, finished!". Odd thing is that in the last drought I saw dead-finish dying amongst other species that battled through :shrug:

It's worse then that. At the moment they are having their holy month. My daughter in law has to remember if she goes out, no food or drink - and that includes water, and it's SUMMER, temp in the high 40 - 50. My granddaugher who is just one can, which is good.

But my poor son, as he works in a government building, no food or drink all day - including water. I asked him how he coped without water, he said "water isn't the problem, coffee is the problem."

Yes, it has a VERY distinctive smell, and the sawdust even more so. I'm thinking of keeping it. I wonder if it's like inscence if you burn it? I might have to make an offering to test it :)

Is the YAR (agh, forgot what that is!) hader? It's heavier. I might use it to make another box on a stem, see if I can get the stem thinner - if you say it's suitable.

I have the false sandelwood looking at me. I am so tempted to make another mushroom, but I want to keep it for awhile, in case something else pops up.

Thanks for them, the RM was lovely to turn.The Yarran is much harder but very workable just the same. It is very well suited for fine detail as you suggested. Sharp tools will still slice you a great finish and shear\scraping works well on it too.
Get stuck into the False sandalwood - you'll love it - plenty more where that came from (it's almost a weed out here :U)

Thanks for the bit of electrical stuff, I haven't tried it yet, but I'll try it on the weekend to clean up the bottom of my mushroom - or tomorrow afternoon, now that the sun is futher over. :)

For some one who took up turning this year you have come a long way you are not afraid to have a go and ask questions and learn from your mistakes. In this challange you seem to have compleated as many boxes as the rest of us and most of them were new designs methods keep up the great work.
