Hi Guys,
Not really woodturning but we all use them - www.justtools.com.au (http://www.justtools.com.au) have a Metabo 18v cordless with 2 batteries +++ for $220 inc gst ($250 below trade price) listed in their specials section. It's a great price for a top product if you need one!!

Any ideas how it stacks up against the DeWalt?

Products-Powertools-Cordless - Drill-Drivers-18V Drill/Driver - DEWALT (http://www.dewalt.com.au/powertools/productdetails/catno/DCD960KL-XE/)

My dead DeWalt is the older version but was a strong workhorse while it lasted.

The Dewalt has better batteries ..Lithium Ion

The Metabo has been updated to have Lithium Ion, and this is the old model.

My FIL had a very similar one (with a 13mm chuck, and only 5 touque settings, and included a hammer drill) and then bought the L-ion one, and gave me the Ni-cad old one.

The drill is awesome. a bit heavy, but that's what the gym is for :D. The hammer is very effective and it's a powerful drill. The batteries still have a lot of life left in them, and in part I think this is because my FIL bought the torch that goes with it which is very useful for deep draining of the nicads - something not required with ni-mh or l-ion, I think.

When I saw this sale I was seriosuly tempted, but after all, one just landed on my lap for free so I couldn't justify it.

Oh, and the battery charger charges Ni-cad and Ni-MH, which means when the cells die, I'll repack them with Ni-MH sub-c batteries (would probably cost about $80-ish, but you end up with a 2.7 AH Ni-mh battery :2tsup:) I did this for a 12v ryobi and the difference is awesome.

Cheers,
Dave

The major problem with all cordless is the cost of repalcement batteries (and they all need them eventually) RIDGID tool give a lifetime free replacement for batteries. They make a top end product at a competitive price IMHO.

Just had a check in the shed (love working from home :D)

My drill is quite differemt - same battery spec (18v, nicad, 2.0Ah), but it seems to be a different model.

This one is mine:
18 Volt Cordless Impact Drill SBP 18 Plus (http://www.metabo.com.au/metabo/au/au/produkte/cordlessimpactdrills/18voltcordlessimpactdrillsbp18plus_6_02422_59.html)

I have no idea how they compare. I stand by what I said though, the one I have is awesome!

Cheers,
Dave

Sorry... me again

Just found the drill I have on Just Tools - Metabo 18V Cordless Impact Drill C45. #SBP18 PLUS C45 (http://www.justtools.com.au/prod2685.htm) Retail is $599, so I guess the retail on the other Metabo would be $220 + $250 = $470, so that should be almost useful for comparison.

I'll have to make the FIL something awesome - I had no idea how much it was worth :o

Cheers,
Dave

In my former life as an electrical contractor, the only power tools I bothered with were Metabo or Makita. IMHO Makita is not the product it used to be and their batteries have to be the worst performing and shortest lifespan. I still have an old 9v Metabo 10+ years old going strong(ish)
I bought one of the Metabo on special so I'll give you an update when it arrives.
Bruce.
