From chainsaw to lathe in an afternoon :)
Ake Ake (Dodonaea Viscosa) .
115 X 60 mm. Sanded to 600 , and burnished with my hand .
Will be interesting to see if it moves , cracks etc .

The other half of the split butt of the wee shrub tree is beside it .
The red bark is visible on the right .

Interesting wood, never heard of ake ake.
Wet turned I suppose, wait and see how it moves or cracks, hope not, but wood can be unpredictable.

It's a very dense hardwood Neil .
Was a pleasure to turn wet , will be a chore to do so dry .

Ake Ake means 'for ever and ever' and the wood of the 3 or so trees ( in various parts of the country ) that have the name , was prized for weapons , and also for mallets and tool handles

Ake Ake (Dodonea Viscosa) .

Quite a high contrast there Jock between the heart and sap wood. Will also be interesting to see if that blonde sap wood remains so over time.

Yes , I have not seen a bowl turned out of this before.
And the few tools were stained from use , so the seasoned colour was a mystery .

Aye , it is that eh , brilliant contrast between heart and sap .
I may raid my cobbers firewood stack for a dry piece to turn .:U

It seems that AkeAke's cousins live in around the world .
This page here (http://www.arthurleej.com/p-o-m-Oct04.html) has a detailed rundown on it , and its locations , under the general name Hopbush .
They include
Hawaii, Arizona, Florida, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, India, Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Okinawa and the southern Ryukyu Islands.
In Hawaii it is called A'ali'i or A'ali'i kumakua, and lei-makers prize its colorful seedpods. Names used in Mexico include Jarilla, Alamillo, Tarachiqui and Chapuliztle. A Malay name is Seringan. In Jamaica it has been called Switch Sorrel. In Florida a name is Varnishleaf. In South Africa it has been called Sand Olive since the 1700s if not earlier.
Hopbush , available in a garden near you :D

Ake Ake is a quite well known timber made famous through a popular, yet annoying Bill Ray Cyrus song

" Don't break my heart,
My Ake Ake Heart'

So what is the correct pronunciation of "Ake"? Is it like the wonderful song mentioned above, the Japanese drink Sake, or one sylable that rhymes with break?

Sake , without the S , will get you right on the money Tex :2tsup:.
Two syllables , A-ke

According to the article in the link abve ,
"The plant's generic name is Dodonæa (pronounced 'dough dawn ee uh' )..... The genus Dodonæa consists of 68 species, 59 of which are found only in Australia.

Check out the neighbours front garden :D
