i am trying to decide between a jet 1220 or 1220VS or woodfast m305 or M305X
is one any better than the other price is about the same on each
i have read everything i can find on the 2 lathes and cant separate them :C

the VS part i will work out once i decide on the brand .

I don't know about the Woodfasts but the smaller Jet's have a bad reputation for inaccuracies. The centres on my 1220 don't line up, for instance

yeah i have just done a few hours googling and read a few bad things about both of those lathes .
i am starting to think i will just buy an mc 900 or little 300 dollar job some thing along those lines until i can afford a vicmarc mainly only for pens . my home made lathe is not ideal for what i am doing .
one other possibility is buy a VL100 minus motor and pinch the motor off my home made lathe and fit it to the little vic . its 1hp i think its a 5/8 shaft and its a foot or flat base type mount forward and reverse wired .

You could always try one off the new model 1218 mini lathes available in 5 speed or variable speed with 3/4 hp at a fraction of the cost of a Jet and the centres do line up.

Cheers

The M305X has got heaps of grunt for a small lathe.
