In picking up some surplus oak wood from a property owner
in Kilmore I noticed some unusual trees. He said they were
"Chinese Scrub", were invasive and hard to eliminate.

With his permission I took off one dry small limb and made a
pen from it. I gave him the pen in a case and he was quite
excited with it.

A Google search shows "Chinese Scrub" as
Cassinia Arcuata and that it grows to 2 metres.
These trees were perhaps 3-4 metres high and about
the same width.

He kept them as shade trees when he had cattle
but the cattle have gone as he is in poor health now.

I have enough to make another pen or so and will post a
pic when done. The wood has soft salmon tonings and some
interesting grain and knots. Very easy to turn.

Has anyone had experience with this wood?

Allan could you show some pics of the piece.

One of the fellows at OTGA recently cut a log he's had for  creamy colouring with pinkish streaks sounds similar one thing is where the pink is has a very distinctive odour  very much like tom cats phys.

This cassinia arcuarta [chinese scrub ] was and is still in some areas used extensively for reclamation work [particularly after ground has been bulldozed for metal detecting for gold] as it is fairly quick to establish and root system prevents further soil degredation.it is usually planted so close that it starves hence low height but in good conditions can make up to 5 metres. a very pretty piece of wood and a lovely pen cheers ww.wally
