What do you think of my new handwheel for my 1640?

My wood hauling Bomb Trailer had a breakdown. I couldn't find seals to fit it, so I mounted the wheel on the offside of my 1640, and at about 150 rpm, turned out the hub on both sides to fit available seals.

I used my Oland Tool, with a 3/16 cutter, to turn it out. I also had to turn down some metal spacers that hold the wheel off the spring shackles. I must say, I'm surprised that I could get this done... by hand... as much as I shake.

...very nifty and resourceful.
While you have the wheel on there, may as well give it a sand and polish :)

It'll be great if you ever need to move the lathe. Just push it over, grab one end and off you go :D:D:D

Cheers,
Dave

Cool customer to do that!!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

Lot of weight hanging out there. I would have taken the tyre off. But then I would not have thought that would work anyway.

You could've balanced it while you were there ;-}

Wolften, Ern, good ideas, but too late.
Dave. you gotta good mind! Cracked me up. :D
Artme... too lazy... besides I'm not strong enough to do that with just tire tools. :)
Hughie, when I was turnin' it, I thought of how easy it would be for you...

You'd want to tread carefully with a thing that size on the lathe; if the bearings are a little tired, they could let go. Then you'd have to haul your carcass off to an industrial area where biased bearing sellers ply their trade. Still, think of the fine beads you could turn with nice new bearings!

There's a lot in a space eh MJ?

BTW, that bit of ancient kauri is now dry, after a year.

Will approach it with fear and trembling ....

I look forward to the result Ern .
I'd like a lump of that myself . The stuff we get down south here is usually trunk wood , straight pine grain , nice , and bland .
And often recycled .

Not sure about this idea for a hand wheel.:?

You wouldn't want to grab it and use it as a brake.:no:

Rip your bloody hand off.:o

Cheers

Tim
