shed time

Hi All
Managed to spend a fair bit of time in the shed this week end and finished up with three bowls that I am reasonable happy with
the first is a bit of Resser's Blackwood and finished up 250dia X 120 high
finished to 600, Hut wax,EEE then buffed with soft bees wax
number 2 is a piece of my "found on road Camphor Laurel" the grain and "quilting' that a appeared as I started to clean the blank up dictated the this had to have as much bottom as possible to show it off 340 dia x 60 high it is a cross between a platter and a bowl finished to 600 and several coats of shellawax with a EEE cut after the second
3rd is a bit of Red Gum with a "punky "lump that was to good to turn out it has had a heap of CA and turned quite well 160 in dia 70 high finished to 1200 with 2 coats of BLO and buffed with soft bees wax

Did you find the Blackwood to be brittle?



:C:C Not so much brittle but a real PITA with tear out on the end grain
finished with a sharp.sharp scraper with as fine a cut as I could
still had to resort to the 80# gouge to take the final tears out
still have one lump left and that has some swirling grain so it will wait untill im in a real patient mood:D:D

One of 's tips: with b/wood often flat will work better.

I'd also play with lapping the burr off as well.
