Called into Leuco yesterday to get a bandsaw blade repaired (new bi-metal blade join snapped just after two uses!) and while there inquired about round inserts.

They do make just one size, but no stock currently in Australia. No A$ price at this stage, but will get that if requested. The sheet they gave me had Eur13.85 on it, but that would probably have no resemblance to what they would cost us imported here in Aust. Cutter specifically designed for wood and plastics.

Dimensions: 11mm diam (flat top), 4mm thick, 15deg cutting angle, 5mm hole (countersunk).

Too small for 1/2" bar. If I remember correctly, a larger diameter was also preferred by most people. 4mm is far in excess of the the thickness required, and would come at extra cost without benefit.

Anyway, info shared in case it is of interest.

Hi,

Has anyone looked at these?

Carbide Depot (http://www.carbidedepot.com/detail.aspx?ID=151059)

Don't know if these are suitable, just found them and thought it might be worth showing someone more knowledgeable.

Thanks

-Gavin

OK,

Trolling back through searches and found that this site has been listed before, and this insert is only 12mm diameter and everyone is looking for 16mm.

Never mind, I'll toddle back to the sidelines and keep looking. A little more informed at least.

Regards

Thanks Gavin, for me 12mm is fine and seeing that the other company has not bothered to get back to me either I take it they are not interested in the business.
I couched my request with the suggestion of importing the tips here into Australia etc etc to encourage a reply.:C

The Carbide Depot charges a lot for international shipping

All other countries:
· UPS Expedited 3-4 day only - $50 USD total shipping charge

would have to get up a major order to keep the costs down ie 50 tips @ 7.75 + 50 for shipping rounds it out at $8.75USD each or 9.35AUD . I suppose posted here total around 10.50 each or so

One of our members here, bitshird, used to list an 11mm round insert but it seems to have disappeared from his website (http://www.woodchuck-tools.com/).

Perhaps you could ask him, if he can't supply perhaps he can steer you in the right direction.

Hi,

I asked him about the round cutter, and I got this reply overnight,

"Gavin I’ve been experimenting with a tool with an 11 mm round cutter, it cuts great, but the tool bar size is limited to 9.5 mm and while it cuts very well that narrow of a footprint is a bit scary there isn’t a lot to keep the tool from twisting if and when it gets a catch, I have some inserts that are coming from Canada, they will be up to 25 mm so I can put them on a good sized bar for stability
I'll keep You updated when I get them.
Thanks
Ken"

As for Carbide Depot, if international shipping costs from them is so high, what are their local USA shipping costs like?

Do we know anyone in the USA that is prepared to receive a local delivery from them and then ship the cutters to Australia for a more realistic price?

Just a thought

Isn't Carbide Depot where F&E got his inserts from? The one where he thought he ordered 5 boxes but only got the 5 tips

OK, bit more info, that more knowledgeable people than myself might be either review or dismiss.

I found some round cutters under the Brand Sandvik.

I am trying to find out where the specs are with regards to size etc.

There is a listing on Ebay, but with no details aside from the part no.

Ebay listing. (http://cgi.ebay.com/RCKT-13-04-00-WH-SM30-carbide-inserts-new-20-pieces_W0QQitemZ180491418982QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2a06207d66#ht_500wt_1182)

Also, have found a site Indexable Cutting Tools (http://www.indexable.com)
They have a PDF catalogue that shows round inserts in sizes up to 1 inch.

What sort of angle are we looking for on these cutters?

Yep. Sorry I haven't been this side of the forum lately.

My apologies to NeilS also for not saying in detail before that the 11mm cutter I saw was exactly what and where he described in full for everybody.
