Firstly thanks to hughie for his hints and comments re making an Oland tool.
I made two since I decided to use two different sizes of HSS tips, one 3/8” round the other 1/4” square.

Since making these I decided on a serious trial to see how they run.
Much of this was turned using the bigger of the two tools, the 1” shaft piece with the 3/8” tip. For some of the final touch up bits I used the smaller tool.

The goblet is the end result. It is made from Melaleuca and finished in poly with a wax rub down on the outside.

Oland tools.
Large version: 1” round steel shaft, 3/8” round HSS tip, 34” total length long
Small version: 3/4” round steel shaft. 1/4” square HSS tip sharpened differently at both ends, 30” total length.

Good work. I use the oland tools a lot and like them. I make them with a cutting tool in both ends, each sharpened differently, and for handles I use plastic tubing similar to that used in fish tanks. One piece has an ID same as the rod and the other piece fits over the first to give it a better feel. This seems to allow better control than the traditional handle and the rod weight reduces tear outs and chatter.

Keep up the good work. Does one need to bring their own drink and miker:2tsup:

'fraid so, :C. But look on the bright side you've got some really good tools to do it with. :2tsup:

Well done, I knew you would succeed, country folks are the most resourceful and handy people around. :U

only occassionally
messing about is fun - sometimes you just have to get a bit of wood and watch the curlies fly until there is no wood left - The technical term for this is "practice" :D
