Turning Ebony. Anything I need to know in advance?

Heyas.

At the last Wood and Woodworking expo in Brisbane I purchased a length of Ebonywood with the idea for using it in longbow construction (tips, veneer strips and possibly risers).

But I'm going to use some of it for pens too. HOWEVER. After cutting off a length and dividing it into 4 blanks, I've realised that this material is extraordinarily hard (dense). The stuff rings like steel when I tap it!
I'm not sure I should attempt this as a fairly raw beginner.

Are there any tricks or 'gotchas' I should watch out for when turning ebony?

Use a short bevel on the gouge or skew.

If scraping, first take the scraper edge burr off with a diamond lap or bench stone.

Keep the heat down when sanding.

I've used New Guinea ebony supposed to be from old mine shaft props. It was a pleasure to turn like most hard woods, just had to take it easy with fine cuts. I even used carbon steel tools on it.

Just before you are about to turn, put some plastic sheet down to catch all the Shavings.
The Ladies who Dye & Spin Wool, would love them, as Ebony is very hard to get, because their are not many of us who Turn Ebony. If it's Solomon Islands Ebony it is prone to splitting, so make sure you keep he heat down, as Ern said.

Make sure your tools are sharp, preferably honed if you normally use a grinding wheel, you want as smooth an edge as you can get. As previously stated take small cuts creeping up onto you shape slowly.

Get as smooth a finish as you can off the tool,

When sanding reduce the lathe to at least half the speed as for turning, sand as you turned, slowly and don't build up heat, Abranet )Mirka Abranet Abrasive Strips 70mm x 125mm (http://www.agwoodcare.co.uk/prod/abranet_abrasive_strips_70x125.html)) is a good cool cutting abrasive.

Is it Solomons Ebony, African ebony or African Blackwood? Lots of timbers get sold as Ebony. Be prepared for black everywhere. In your orifices and all over your workspace. Go real slow as everyone has said. It will polish beautifully so there is no need to finish aside from a little wax.

I have a small stick labelled "Queen Ebony" that I picked up at one of the the WWW shows with a view to turning up some small tool handles. Very dense timber indeed, but can be planed with a very sharp blade. What species is this exactly?

Some useful comments here about turning this stuff, especially regarding the sanding (which I wouldn't have thought of).

For a few years now I've been compiling a common name timber list derived from published data and so far there are 60 entries for 'Ebony'.
None for 'Queen' but there is a Queensland Ebony, Bauhinia carronii F.Muell.(syn. Lysiphyllum carronii) [Fabaceae]

I agree that its fairly prone to tearout; I got the best finish on the piece I have using a high angle plane and scraper.

I've turned two pieces of S.I. Ebony that I got at the Melb WWW show. 70mm blanks, 300 odd mm long.

It turns beautifully with sharp tools between centres. Barely bother to sand.

End grain hollowing is another matter - don't try to scrape the inside of say boxes using any more than say a 4-6mm tool. DAMHIKT.

IMHO, harder to turn than mulga and gidgee on end-grain work, but only just.

The white vinegar / steel wool treatment also works a treat as well.
