Has to fit in a 50mm cube the man says  Hard to get that part out of my head and ended up with the following box - eventually :o:C
Pic 1. At left - A mock-up to see how it might look and work out how I would hold it. Centre - Miscalculated the wall thickness and tried to go to far into the corner with a spindle-gouge - At least one part clipped my nose and I was so sure the jolt had snapped my gouge I wasn't game to open my eyes - but it survived :U At right - the template I used for the hollowing.
Pic 2. The adaptors I made to slip over the jaws - did the trick :2tsup:
Pic 3. The finished box - Scrub Stringybark (rhodamnia rubescens) with 2 coats of DO. (accidentally :B Note to self - do NOT use oil on shapes that CANNOT be buffed)
Pic 4&5 The inside

This is a bit of a roughy - actually just the prototype but I won't have time to do a good'un  . The box-in-a-ball-in-a-box I did for my first entry led me to thinking about something similar but more aesthetically acceptable. Turning on 6 axis gives a whole lot of room for error and I had my fair share on this one but lessons learnt will help on the next.
Cocked up the second face and it all went downhill from there - the reason for my thread about templates - need a very precise template to get this one right.
Turned from waste melaleuca with rot all through it and finished with wipe on poly.

If there is a separate category for boxes, this is my entry in it: the Rubik's cube box.

Acacia sp. Shellawax

But if there is only one open category, this is my entry.

Is it a vase? A box with a finial? No, an apothecary jar with mixing bowl and pestel. And it all fits in the 50mm cube. :)

Western Myall, Shellawax.
