Greetings,

I am moving from my JET 1236 to a JET 1642. Does anyone have some advice on which coring system is the best to invest in?

I did a search in the forum without finding anything. If I missed something, a pointer would be appreciated.

Thank you muchly,

John

Hello John,

I,ve just bought a Kelton bowl saver. It has a few foibles but once worked out it works well. You do need to secure the wood very securly as there is quite a bit of stress during coring - large jaws on a solid chuch, also loosen the drive belts as a bit of belt slippage is advantageous as you can get some serious catches, particularly when learng how to use the tool. The last few times I didn't get any catches at all so I think I've figured it out, it works very well, I got the complete set, 7 knives in all. It would be good to see one in operation/demonstrated before you buy if possible, I didn't but it wasn't difficult to work out how to use the system.

The manufacturers site is - http://www.kelton.co.nz

All the best - Peter

Many turners speak well of the Kelton (aka McNaughton) system. I was about to invest when I learned that on my Vicmarc 175 there wasn't enough clearance between the top of the banjo and the lathe centre to accomodate the gate (Kelton can advise you on what's needed).

It also emerged that while it's possible to use the standard set of cutters on a lathe with 1hp it takes a bit of finessing to get the technique right.

Hello Peter, Sprog and Ern,

Thank you all for your advice. As you might have guessed, when I don't know about something, I find people that I can trust for their wisdom. You guys are it

The Kelton and One-Way seem to be the two big ones with Kelton being mentioned more often. I assume that the 1 1/2 hp motor will be enough. It may come down to cost.

If anyone else has some experience or "gotcha's" on them, please let me know.

Have great days!

John

When I was researching the Kelton system John I found a number of useful pages on the web. Didn't bookmark them but a google will easily find them.

In summary there were some critical factors in getting the best out of the system: sharpening of cutting tip, opening up the entry point somewhat, frequent clearing of chips and alignment of the top of the cutter with the spindle centre.

Once these are sorted tho the system appears to work well and fast.
