Has anyone had any experience with the shaving brush and blade holder kits one can buy and add handle to?

Why spend months of your life staring at your soap-covered mug in the mirror?

I've seen them on websites, and been interested, but it is only for the 3-blade one. My shaver has 47-and-a-half blades in the stupid things, so it's not compatible with the cost-more-than-their-weight-in-gold blades... I'd be interested to hear how they go though.

Cheers,
Dave

This link will take you to a reputable supplier that advertises sometimes in the AAW magazine American Woodturner.
The items I looked at appeared to be premium quality.
I hope this is useful.

There are a few suppliers of high end product around, and from the other forums to which I belong, there are quite a few that have made enviable products. It would have been a perfect gift for my father, if he was still alive, not sure how many people are around of the correct generation that use them :-.

Had look at making shaving brushes a few years ago, but didn't proceed with the idea.

Reckon there would be a niche market for them, particularly with wealthy overseas tourists, but you don't see them in galleries or tourist shops here. A small locked display case with brush handles made from our specy indigenous woods should work quite well.

The specialist shops may also be interested. e.g (http://www.mensbiz.com.au/shop/shave/shaving-brushes/cat_26.html).

What stopped me from proceeding was some qualms I had over the bristles used in the top end brushes. The premium brushes all use badger hair knots and I wasn't convinced that I would be comfortable with how they are sourced. If I could have found an acceptable Australian alternative bristle source that I was confident about I may have given the idea a go.

I hope you find something that works for you, Brendan, as I'm sure you will quickly win a profile in the premium shaving brush community.

Hi,
Funny how you have had more spam from the bearded weirdies, including myself than answers to your query.

I'm glad you said it. I guess there ain't many out there that have tried them out. I might have to go it on my own. I still enjoy a good shave (not every day though) and think it would be more enjoyable with some good looking gear.

From what I have found (via the ever reliable Wikapedia) badger bristle mainly comes from China where it sourced sustainably.

Brendan,

There a few forums around for blades shavers ie cutthroat razors. I cruised around them when I was selling my cutthroat razor last year. It might be a avenue of sales etc for you.

Brendan, don't believe what you read in Wikipedia.

It's just a step above vanity publishing.

This is something i have been thiking about for some time want one for myself had a look at the web site(golden nib) and will get one of the cheaper knots and make one up.
What type of finish would you suggest to make it water resistance?

Maybe a survey of badgers to see what they think is "sustainable".

Australia (http://www.rustins.com.au/rustins/rustinsplasticcoating%20p1.htm) try this link

I did a training session with Steve (toolbagsplus) earlier in the year, and he introduced me to a turner down there, who turns brushes, and makes badger hair brushes from them. A thing of beauty without a doubt! Maybe if you PM Steve, he'll put you in touch?
