Well guys, sad to report that I've gotten out of the turning business. Have sold all my turning gear to a guy whose on the board of the Wood Turning Center in Philly.

CFS, the left leg, lower back on the left side, and my left arm have conspired against me to inflict as much pain as possible!!! Being a lefty, the condition has left me in a lurch as my right arm really ain't trained to do too much.

It was sad to see all the stuff go after 30 years of a lot of enjoyment, and especially meeting a lot of great folks at the shows...will sorely miss all that.

Even though I am not a turner anymore, I'm hoping that you lot will allow me to stay with the forum - for harassment purposes, you know! and to keep you all on the straight and narrow:U

I'm sorry to hear that Ed.
It would be very difficult for me if I had to give it up completely.
I don't think I could go cold turkey and stay out of prison for very long .
I've had some downtime that has kept me out of it for a few months
but having something chucked and ready to finish was always a part
of my recovery plan for myself.
Exploring the mini option seems like sound wisdom.
Vicmarc has a sit down machine on the market now, it tilts like the oneway.
I'm not sure what the specs are on it but it might be good therapy at times.

Not good news, but don't give up completely. Pens if you must, but also consider scroll saw work, band saw, etc.

You could also take a cue from Dale Chihuly (glass artist). When he lost an eye, he also lost binocular vision and couldn't do the work himself; now provides counsel to his juniors.

Anything beats daytime television.

Please stay plugged in here. I started with pens and a mini lathe and am having a ball. There are far few teachers for any craft these days. If it ain't automatic, today's younger crowd has no use for it, except for the few nostalgic ones. Someone's gotta teach them or the craft will be lost. Nothing is better than hand made. I hate getting assembly-line goods if I can get it made by a craftsman. Besides, we are looking at a slowdown in Japanese goods for a long time, so what better than supplying to ourselves, one at a hand-made time!

He Ed, that's not a nice message for me, but I can understand why, by reading your message.
I hope you stay in touch with us, simply, we cannot without you!!!
BTW, saw you presence on MyFamily for a short time, but saw also that you are now, an inactive member. Possible for the same reason.
I was an active member for 4 years on MyFamily, still interested in what happens there.

ps. Just want you all to know that I have an appointment with a rheumatoid specialist on April 26 over at the University of Pennsylvania in Philly - hopefully she will come up with something concrete - keeping fingers crossed!

Hope the docs can find something to help you out Ed. Your situation is my own worst nightmare - couldn't handle having to give it up and some days the bones and bits make me wonder how long I'll be able to keep turning.

How about tackling miniatures

Ed Reiss
17th March 2011, 09:34 PM
the future plans are just that, TT.

If they can patch this old fart enough to where I'm not taking a nap 8 to 10 times a day then I'll invest in a mini or midi and do just small stuff - at present, I've undertaken photography as a hobby, which is nowhere near as strenuous. Got a Nikon D3100, some video tutorials and am trying to assimilate the do's and don'ts of getting half way decent shots. So...I am trying to keep busy within the limits an uncooperative body.:U

Ed, I was so upset when I received your PM, about your condition, but as I said SWMBO loves a good cup of coffee, so you are still on our list of people to see in the US, so maybe I will bring over a big bottle of Bundy Rum, it seems to fix most ailments LOL. Will keep in touch, but will be on your doorstep late September or early October, god willing.

Sept. is just around the corner, Crocy (at least it seems to be as fast as this year is going so far), so I'd better break out the hoover, dust pan, and mop to get things ship-shape for your visit.

Looking forward to it :U

Hi Guys,

As the title says...still around! (now, now, no groans!!!!)

Well, had the visit with the rheumatoid specialist at the end of April. Had an hour sit-down with her, bored her to death with my problems, then she gave me a (large) sheet of paper, which the computer printer spit out, with all the blood tests I needed to get. So, off to Lab-Corp where the blood sucker took a couple of pints (seems like anyway) for testing.
Tuesday had the follow-up with the specialist. Turns out my system is devoid of vitamin D, so she prescribed these vitamin -D horse pills. One a week for 12 weeks, then re-test to see what the level is.
Another thing my body is low on is testosterone...kinda' had a sneaking suspicion 'bout that as the pitch of my voice had been getting higher this past year!!!! So, now have to make an appointment with a urologist for that...gonna' have to rob a bank to pay for all this stuff!

Anyway, at the urging of a few friends here on the forum (especially Ticklingmedusa), I have been getting out as much as possible to just walk around and take some pics with the new camera. Went over to the local cemetery today (no...not to pick out a spot) and took some shots there...some beautiful areas there at Lakeview. While driving around there and exploring for scenic shots, came across the maintenance yard and the woodpile they have going...sure, now I find a stash like this now that I'm no longer turning
Gotta go now...running out of steam again. Hope all y'all are doing well, and keep on turning!

G'day Ed!! Great to see you are still of a mind to be wwitty.:):)

Maybe the horse pills and a bit of testosterone will do you the world of good.

Vitamin D is needed for bones so perhaps some of your aches and pains are due to osteoporosis.

Hope you don't have an overlay of depression with this. Thast just manifies things - DAMHIK! Be worth getting it checked out.

Stay positive old mate and we look forward to reports of progres towards a return to the shvings arena.

Hi Ed

Sound like your rheumatologist is on the money there. Been on 3000 iu of D3 a day for about ten years. It has proven benefits for the likes of us and helpful with our bones as well (have an old friend who did the critical research on D and bone density). I usually buy up big when it's on special.

And the T should give you a lift in more ways than one. Will also help with any depression.

Keep your chin up!

Ed, good luck with the health problems.

Yes, my GP says most of his patients are short of Vit. D.

We need sunlight to produce it but are told to keep out of it cos of skin cancer.

So horse pills it is!

Good luck mate, hope things improve. As to your low testosterone, I have been on regular injections for 18 months to make my body stop producing testosterone in my fight against prostate cancer and have another 18 months to go.

Maybe I could send you some of mine. :U

Whoops...almost forgot, Ray. It's all oak in the pile, prolly as bad as your radiata pine...but some of it had a lot of spalting which would have been worth turning.
Turned (no pun intended) one of the guys in the club on to the location...he and a few others cleaned the place out today. They thought it was generous of me to do that, was going to charge 'em a buck per 10 pounds, but thought better of it and made it a buck fifty:U
