I have always got away with cutting a deep and oversize recess in the base when green turning. As long as this is big enough that the small dimension (after drying and ovalling) still fits over the jaws, I find that an energetic expansion of the jaws is secure enough to do the same kind of inside recess shown.

Its actually closer than you think. A few years back I managed a R&D machine shop and the powers that be wanted me to "train" all the tradesmen on how to use the all machine shop equipment.

Fully documented training programs and all the other requisite records to be noted and kept for posterity.

I cant really write the replies from the machine shop staff on this forum, but use your imagination.:upset:
