Got last week Merbau hardwood beams of about 2 meters long and 10cm square, a surprise of a good knowledge of who knew I'm a woodturner.
Were quite weathered.
Have a piece sawed off, and made a lidded box.
83 mm round and 136mm high including the rubberwood knob.
Here a few little pictures.
Regards, Ad

Thank Neal, this stuff is really hard as rock, had often to sharpen my tools.

Very nice - I'm quite fond of merbau too, all my tool racks are made from it as I got some decking offcuts quite cheaply

Nice work Ad. The Rubberwood knob is a neat touch!:):):)

I suspect Merbau may get harder as it gets older. The coupple of pices I have turned were not as hard on the tools as you describe,

What finish did you use Ad?

Arthur, guess you're right with saying this merbau get harder as it gets older.
Got this wood from my befriended wood supplier, I have an appointment with him, he's looking around for special wood for me, and if he need some turnings, I'm there.
Nice deal, and his coffee is very good.
He had some difficulties with cutting the beams in shorter pieces with the circular saw, and my first thoughts, wow that's tough stuff.
But amazingly with the sharp handsaw goes it much better.
Used Acryllic lacquer.
Best regards, Ad

Interesting timber, wonderful colour and a nicely shaped box. Interesting finial shape but it fits the rest of the work.

Well done.
