G'day all,
I was hoping somebody might be able to ID this timber for me.
The timber came from a very old fence post from a property in the south east of SA. It is very hard and heavy for its size, i was thinking of using it for tool handles etc, although the bowl came up not too bad.

Cheers Joe

Yellow Box is my guess. It will be, more than likely, a eucalypt native to the area that the fence post was found. And being SE SA I'm thinking yellow box.

I think Brendan could be right.

Have turned some and I think it is part of the eucalyptus concretus or ferrites genus.:D

Agree with :aro-u: but it could also be Sugar Gum.

Always good to know what you're turning.

Go for ferrites rather than concretus if you have a choice; kinder to your tools.

If someone absolutely has to know what it is that I've given or sold to them, I say it's Eu. Nondifferentiata :-}

I like the variation in foot treatment you've done with that piece.

Variation is the right word for it,
I was a little rushed to finish, as it was for a visitor, the carving came out of necessity
from a damaged foot. I would have liked more time and the right tools to
finish it better, but when your visitor is dealing with 18 month old triplets and is leaving
you do what you can.

Well, in a perfect world we can all be perfect.

I assumed this was a salvage job and reckon you turned it into a plus.
