I import rolls of carpet backing fabric, typically 385cm wide fabric wound on cardboard cores weighing around 400kg.
From time to time we get squashed cores due to careless fork lift drivers.
Sometimes the damage is to severe that the rolls cannot be run in the carpet manufacturing plant.
Many years ago I worked for Australian Paper Manufactures and they often had the same problems.
They were able to open up the cores with what they called a "Bulls Prick", actually a piece of very hard wood Ebony? that had been turned into a cone shape, probably abouit 100mm at the base tapering to maybe 25mm maybe 600mm long.
This cone was then hammered into the squashed core with a big mallet and the core was opened up enough to go onto the printer feed equipment.
In a way a simple enough bit of kit I would have thought, but I don't know where to begin to find someone who could make it...then I came across the Woodworking Forums.
So my hope is that someone here can help me.

The right name is a "pig" and I can make one if you like.

Made quite a few for dragging the power cables through Hoddle Street.
