I am in the process of building a rose engine based loosely on this design:
http://www.ornamentalturners.org/assets/content/RoseEngine.pdf
http://www.woodturner.org/products/aw/howto/rose/MDFConstruction_v6%5B1%5D.pdf
http://www.woodturner.org/products/aw/howto/rose/mdfdrawings.pdf

The design given only has one rosette at a time and is on the outside of the headstock. Mine will have the rosettes between two pillars of the headstock, and as such they may be difficult to change.

Two things on this:

I plan to make the rosettes removable without sliding them off - ie, in two halves, with two panels bolting the two halves together. Has anybody done this? any thoughts on issues im likely to encounter?

Secondly, are there any recommendations on rosette shapes I should look at? I wrote a brief program to generate a bunch of them, but this is without having experience on what shapes to use. I'm getting lots of cool looking things but having trouble visualising them on wood

Nice to see your interest and would like to see picks of your Rose Engine when done or even as its being built.

Here's fine example of Rosettes (http://www.ornamentalturners.org/forum/gallery2.php?g2_itemId=226)

Various ways I guess of mounting them, using space blocks and securing each individualy. A split ring one would be new for sure, major concern would be alignment and keeping cylindrical. One way would be slotted master with detachable matching Rosettes. Patterns well your imagination is the limit.

Thanks for the link. Good to see the standards for one of the only commercial ones.

How do people cut them accurately? I'm thinking scrollsaw is probably the best I have access to, although this is tempting (http://www.ponoko.com/).

I have cut some via scrollsaw, you could use a CNC or yes that link or a 3D printer.

Or use a router and your rose engine like many do.

There are lots of ways.
