As NZ Carver is coming down to Melbourne in November it seems an opportune time to have a Forum Turn on.

The theme will be how to avoid things going bump in the night.:D

Ken Wraight will be showing how he hot melts on and other things.

Jim Carroll is bringing chucks and jaws across for sale.

Chucks, mandrels and all other things that hold work on the lathe will be covered.

So if you have a problem holding something on the lathe bring it along.

The date is Sunday the 27th of November from 9:00AM.

BYO lunch. BBQ will be here for those that want it.

On the other hand, I will look into using flybuys to come down just for a long weekend maybe . Trouble is you mexicans have so many great events like this, I can't come to all of them :C

No probs. I'll also bring my pendant and perfume chucks.

If anyone wants any cast blanks brought down let me know (ie pepper grinder, pen, bottle stopper, pendants etc).

Got back yesterday, almost missed my flight, I thought it was on Wednesday :- After living in my mother's ultra-clean house, mine looks awful :(. I'm going to have to clean up a bit. I did get a heap of deliveries though, including 370 crocodile jaws in 2 big boxes :oo::2tsup:.

I am particularly interested in seeing the different ways to hold natural edge bowls when it's time to finish the foot and/or underside of the bowl.

Internal jam chuck; cheap and cheerful as you can turn your own.

Needs tailstock support obviously which means some manual finishing at the end.

Or a vacuum chuck that inserts into the hollow and has a gasket at the rim that's good enough to hold the piece with light touch finishing. Complete most of the foot with TS support, then retract it and finish the rest.

But it seems to me more efficient though not in every case possible (for design reasons) to finish the foot when you're doing the bowl outside, where the foot allows chuck expansion mounting in a recess. (That matter has been exhaustively argued about in this forum; it works for me).

Just a couple for you and , Ken. Most is probably old hat but a re-fresher course would be good:

- chucks v. faceplates
- tenon sizes and shapes
- tenons v. recesses
- removing evidence of the holding method
- faceplate sizes
- screw lengths and number
- wasteblocks
- using ply as wasteblocks - failure?
- hot melt basics
- strength
- removing it
- tail stock support basics
- crush chucks
- jam chucks and best materials

No doubt there are many, many others.
