View Full Version : Needle cases

I purchased a few needle cases from Jim Carroll recently
and made one for the Wallan Expo.

The Kilmore Quilters Club had a stand just near ours and
one member purchased it. The next thing ... they went
crazy as a few wanted one.

Consequently I have been busy for the last few days and
in my wisdom created two different styles. One is a
standard type with the wooden casing turned by me and the
components pressed together.

The second type is a magnetised version. Before pressing
the components together I do the following:
a) Drill a neat 1/8th inch hole through the base cap.
b) Glue together a small rare earth magnet, a 1/4" long
wooden plug and a rubber disc.
The magnet sits on the table, the wooden plug on
top of it then the rubber disc on top of the wood.
c) When dry push the three components into the base cap
with the rare earth magnet next to the hole.

d) Press the other components together.

This then allows the user to pick up dropped needles
very easily by pointing the base cap at them.

Needles can be stored inside safely and emptied easily
as the magnetic field does not reach them inside the
case.

From Sandalwood (magnetic), New Guinea Rosewood (magnetic),
Minirici (standard), and Forest Red Gum (standard).

The magnet in each is quite strong and has no difficulty
picking up a two inch nail or quite a few needles at once.

Clever idea the magnet. What about one in the lid so as you open in the needles will follow. Save tipping them up and needdles going all over.
Wheelinround you very pointed in your wit today

A lady saw the one I had for sale at the Wallan Expo recently
but missed out on buying it.

I made some more and she asked me to come to the local
"Circle of Friendship" this morning and show the women.
They purchased the three I took there and ordered another
eleven, plus an order for a blackwood bowl and another woman
ordered 10 wooden wheels about 3" diameter.

Another woman put in an order - her husband recently retired
and she wants him to get out of the house and give her some
peace. (Hope she doesn't mean permanently). I have invited
him to come to my home and have a look at woodturning.

The woman at the Circle of Friendship is President of the
Quilters club and purchased the three needle cases to take
to them and show at their next meeting.

I hope Jim Carroll has a few kits in stock.
