Anyone ever tried turning a small lamp shade - would the heat of the globe be too much for the timber?

Use those energy saving bulbs for turned shades. They never create that much heat. Standard bulb will eventually atleast darken the wood at some points.

Same as mikko, those globe types are potentially dangerous especially if you go over 60 watt.
