I am trying to set up a new tool holder for my lathe. I currently have a rack on the wall directly behind the lathe, although i am always cautious of learning over the spinning lathe particularly with loose clothing. This type of tool rack seems to be fairly common and i find by the end of my turning session, all of my tools are scattered on the lathe bed itself and sometimes the occasional one will fall on the floor needing another sharpen.:~ I guess this will always be especially when we need the same tool over and over. I was curious to see what everyone else uses.

It's something that I thought about and tried a couple of things. I initially went with a stand alone stand which rotated however I found it annoying and in the way. In the end I located my tools behind the lathe in various sizes of PVC pipes, depending on the tool size. Since then I don't have any tools lying around and no tools dropping on the ground necessitating a sharpen. I did think about reaching over a spinning lathe however this has been a non issue (for me at least) because I don't wear loose, floppy clothing when using ANY machinery and the lathe is turned off when I change tools (usually to think about what I'm about to do).

Picture attached.

Hope this helps.

Being new to wood turning I though about where the tools are to be located. At the moment I have them placed to the end of the lathe on the right.
Already need more room as I purchased more chisels.

Not the perfect solution but itworks....... my tools live in their chest and what I think I need for a project is put out at the start (some times) ....:rolleyes:it was a kitchen stool until it got lost in my shed

No picture necessary for me.

On the Lathe cabinet under the bed bars, amongst all the shavings etc!

My solution made from scraps and bolted through the gap in the bed with a wooden block underneath

The topic was well covered in this thread (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/show-us-your-tool-holding-system-97995/).

Also this one (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/i-need-tool-tidy-122515/). The arrangement that I made in Post # 23 is still working very well for me.
