12 months ago, I bought my first lathe, and started on the road to woodturning. I have had no formal training or lessons, just read a lot, and watched several youtube videos. During that time I have made significant advances. I started out with mushrooms, vases and egg cups, then progressed onto bowls and goblets, tried some natural edges, plates, pens, and hollow forms. I taught myself to sharpen freehand. I seem to have found a liking for banksia pods, and have turned a few goblets, and a couple of lamps. I thought it fitting to celebrate my first anniversary as a wood turner with something a little different, so here it is - a winged, natural edge, banksia pod bowl, with redgum spindle. The pod is 200mm x 90mm, the bowl is 70mm diameter.
It combines pretty much everything I have learned over the past year - several different chucking methods, hollowing, spindle turning and working with natural edges. I haven't tried segmented turning yet - I think that's next...
