View Full Version : A sneak peek into my segmented twisted mind

This will be one of 10 to 16 windows in the feature ring of my most insane segmented attempt. This one piece alone had 590 individual pieces of wood. With the additional upper and lower rings, the feature ring alone should exceed 10,000 pieces. This doesn't include the rest of the vessel. I don't even have a lathe big enough to turn it yet but I'm making it anyway. I must be nutz.:2tsup: C&C are welcome.

You are sillier than me. :roflmao: I have a couple of lathes that would be big enough if you want to come over here.:D

If you were in Tucson I'd take you up on that. If everything goes the way I hope though, I'll have a lathe big enough to turn it by the time it's ready to go on it. I estimate it to be about 20 to 22 inches in diameter if I do it with 14 of these.

Only you can currently envisage the final piece but if that small segment is anything to go by it will be stunning.

What lathe are you after, if we can ask?

Well, this will obviously be one to watch. Please keep it well documented Bill. Will it be a platter-type form?

A superb design. I look forward to seeing it come together. I have no idea how you get all those intricate patterns.

Bill, that is absolutely beautiful. I will be watching with keen interest.

An amazing piece of work, but the term "too much time on one's hands" springs to mind.

Thanks everyone. Actually the term never enough time comes to my mind. LMAO. I own my Car Audio business and work 50 hrs a week there. I'm building an 8'x11' entertainment center, Making a staved turning for a gift, building a humidor and then I threw this into the mix for a contest I'm in for segmented feature rings. I don't even know how I find the time to do this stuff. Oh well, you know what they say "Idle minds are the work of the devil" No time to idle here.:2tsup:

A stunning design Bill!! :2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

By the looke of your list of projects and the complexity of that design, I will concede that your segmented twisted mind is much more orderly than my cluttered arrangement!!:D

My friend, my messes make messes on top of the mess from the last mess made. I try desperately to clean my shop but goblins come in when I'm not there and throw stuff everywhere, steal my pencils and hide my tape measures. :D I try to follow the rule of picking up 10 things every time I leave the shop. Problem is, i use 30 things if I even open the door.
Actually my biggest problem is my shop is way too small for all the tools. So take out a few things, toss some saw dust off the lathe and the place is trashed again. I'd almosrt have to clean every 15 minutes. Sooo, I have a twisted mind and a cluttered arrangement. :oo: A phoenix will rise from the ashes.

You're killin me LMAO. I've decided to make it 12 features. The ring will be somewhere in the 26" diameter range. The delima is that my lathe only has 14" capacity. I'm working on getting a new lathe but Idon't want to jinx myself so I can't say what it will be just yet. More on that soon I hope.

Made some more progress over the weekend. I've got 2 made, 2 more centers made and 8 more cut up in pieces. I'm working on a humidor as well so unfortunately I can't stay completely focused. I'm farther along that this picture but I'll post more soon. Please enjoy.

We're gonna be here a while. I cut up hundreds of pieces last weekend but ran out of material. Last night I vacuum clamped more laminations but I won't get much more done til the weekend. I'll be back with more soon though.:2tsup:

I agree and me too

How about one of these (http://www.turnrobust.com/The_Lathes.html)replacement lathes? Hmm only 25" inboard might have to get one with a riser block or two. Maybe the 60" outboard will do it

Actually it'll be between the American Beauty and the VB36. I'm working on selling my quad to fund the investment. I hate to sell it but the turners vortex is pulling me in. :2tsup:

And then there were 4 panels. I think it's going to work out to need 10 all together.

The down side of a project this big is down time on the lathe. This weekend I'm going to finish up some humidor work I have to do. I recently bought a LOT of Glaser tools including the Glaser Mini QR set. Now that I have all these tools I started a project that took me off the lathe. SO, this weekend I'm going to turn this beautiful blank I dug up using only the mini's. I'll post a pic of the wood tomorrow and hopefully someone can help me identify it. It's hard as nails and has a super tight grain with a beautiful contrast. If the mini's can turn this piece of wood, they can turn anything. Pics tomorrow my friends. :2tsup:

I am not exactly sure of what your making but also watching with keen interest. I think they already look good enough to be considered complete!!!
