100 year old elm bowl

hi guys,
about a year ago i scored some nice pieces of
old elm trees that were beening chopped down and chipped:o:o
shock horror:~:~,
there were 7 trees along the front of a school in ebor
and i think a twig fell down on one of the litte darlings
so ''CHOP THEM DOWN'' was the order of the day:C
the school was established in 1906 and the trees were planted
around the same time,so that is how i got a brand new 100year
old bowl:U,just before xmas i gave the school back the bowl and they
were very appreciative, i thought it would be a good keepsake,
and reminder of the past history for them too!

Now not being local I do not know if what you have is Elm or a local timber of the same name.

The grain pattern top centre of the 4th pic looks very much like our London Plane (a city tree very resistant to pollution) but because when quarter-sawn the effect of the grain grain pattern makes it better known as Lace Wood.

One of the old adages about Elm is;

'Elm hateth man, and waiteth'

That is, it is well known for dropping boughs at unexpected times, and has caught out the unwary more than once. So possibly it's a saying that has travelled and the 'twig' was seen as a forerunner of future problems.

But whatever the wood it, I think you've done it proud and I hope the school treasures the platter the way it should.

hi guys,
thanks for the comments,
the timber is english elm,this area where i live is not
called ''New England'' for nothing,minus 10degrees in winter is common
every piece of timber was mulched except for the several pieces
i saved from the jaws of the mulcher :o:o
