Is there any chance that the timber sourced from the Solomons is (certified) designated CBFT Community Based Fair Trade or from FSC Forest Stewardship Council certified forests, plantations and salvaged logs?
There are lots of terrible things happening in the tropics and I'm happy to post a few piccies to prove it. I'd hate to think we are aiding forest destruction.

Perhaps sellers could comment on the status of tropical timber when they offer it for sale.

Carry Pine show us your pics.
Forest destruction is like a sports injury, you don't want to look but can't help but look!

There's two types of logging in Solomon Islands: the majority is cut for the round-log export market run by Malaysians, where they bribe their way in and log massively, leaving nothing but corruption and sexually transmitted diseases behind; and there's the sawn timber market, which is chainsaw mills and Lucas mills run by locals cutting kwila and rosewood, trees that can only be exported as sawn timber. This is perhaps less environmental impact because it's smaller scale, but of course still is having impact on kwila and rosewood.

As someone who has tried various times with different local Solomon Islander "suppliers" of sawn Solomon Islands timber, I can tell you that Solomon Islanders think absolutely nothing of breaking an agreement made in good faith, and running away with whatever money you have given them in advance.

Because they're hopeless money managers they never have money for whatever upfront costs to get the operation going, then you give money and they spend it on something else and are back to having no money. Either that or you haven't paid upfront but still there's excuses on and on until you get tired and finally give up.

Between the conmen and tossers there's not much else. When the local cutters get desperate eventually they sell to the expat exporter who offer prices but strictly no concessions (take it or leave it cash basis, no bulls--t, timber delivered into yard at cutter's own expense or no deal). But when a local offers timber to anyone else, watch out.

I spent years in SI and I know I'm not alone. Failed deals are the general rule. Sure, nice friendly people but totally untrustworthy in business. That's number one reason why they're an undeveloped country: the 'transaction cost' (risk) of doing business with them is extremely high. So proceed with the greatest of caution.

Gunnaduit says it better than me.
All I asked was that members offering these tropical timbers state whether it is certified or not. A fair ask, I think!

Here are my piccies as promised from that part of the world. These are from New Guinea and they contast the harvesting of selected timber by locals with the wholesale destruction of forests by multinationals. Some Australians feel so strongly about what is happening, they have set the local villagers up with a Lucas mill which fits in a tinnie (pictured) and provide ongoing technical assistance.
Forum members should be able to work out which pictures are which. I'm happy to send any member a CD of pictures and give them a contact number if they would like to become more involved.

I think the problem is that we give these people no choice.

If there was a way for them to make a decent living without raping the forest Im sure they would take it.

They need an alternative.
No good pointing the finger and saying "YOU ARE DOING IT ALL WRONG"

Give then an alternative.

If you were in these peoples shoes, you would do exactly the same.

So stop pointing the finger of blame....:((

The alternative is selective logging with locals making the decisions. Logs are sawn up on site (value added) and containered. This compares with clear felling and dragging logs out to sea to be barged to Malasia.
