At the Eastern Woodturners Wood Steel and Steam festival one of the demonstrators, David Shing, in showing new techniques of holding work turned out of an small oak branch a ball with a new tenon on the side ready for turning a small bowl with a different grain orientation.

I was lucky to get one of the balls he turned for finishing of. Sanded to 600 inside and out and finished with 5 coats of Minwax Antique oil.

Subsequently I was able to obtain some more oak from the same tree as above from which I made a pen cup holder. Although from the same tree the timber is much lighter and has more distinct grain lines.

Again sanded and finished as above.

I think you'll find the difference in the grain pattern is down to the way you've turned the wood allowing the annual growth rings to become more pronounced.

Any idea what sort of 'Oak' it was?
