I guess you could swap out the bench grinder for a variable power drill or a pedestal drill mounted sideways. :)

Well he doesn't have far to go to sharpen the chisel, also noticed that its a split turning as well :o

I guess its the forerunner to the DVR just needs variable speed.

And he's turning with a Carbon Steel Firmer Chisel - well I'll rephrase that shall I - He's scraping ...!

Assuming 50 Hz power and slow speed grinder it is turning at around 1400 RPM. Not bad for a spindle.

He could use a little help with technique, but I can't fault the construction of the lathe.

If you have little money but available time, ingenuity, and desire, you can make it work.
