Has anyone used Skydd Wood Oil (http://www.ikea.com/aa/en/catalog/products/00170993/?query=SKYDD+Wood+treatment+oil%2C+indoor+use) from IKEA as a finish>.

I came across it while escorting (being dragged) SWMBO around the store and have bought a bottle. It's clear, no colour or included stain.

I have applied it to a green field maple (Acer campestre) vase I have part turned to retard the drying a little. I'll finish it with the stuff when it's dry, so it will take a while to see how it turns out.

But as I've never heard of it before and never heard mention of anyone using it - I'm curious.

From the product description it says it's mineral oil, it is often used for wood chopping boards or for wooden salad bowls. You can also get it from most chemists as well, might be labeled as Parrifin oil as well.

Also labelled as Liquid Paraffin.

In the UK Kerosene is also known as Paraffin - so can be confusing

Thanks guy's - I know what Liquid Paraffin is although I'd never considered it as a finish - well except this time in ignorance.

So far the Maple has gone a sort of golden yellow. But that might just be the wood oxidising.

It's my preferred finish for food bowls (ie pharmacy grade mineral oil).

I've seen a turner in the US use a mineral oil mixed with a paste wax as a way to reduce dust when sanding and as a finish.

isn't this stuff what we call "caster(or. sp?) oil" ?

Neal.

Different stuff Neal

Castor oil was used as a laxative but is very harsh. It is a plant product.

Paraffin still used but more gentle.
