Hi

I came across this in my latest book.. SHOP THEORY by James Anderson , 1968 edition , ex Bryan college Dayton Tennessee

It describes the recommended method of honing an edge on a lathe tool . They write , to hone and edge, get it about 1/32" wide at an angle that is 1 to 3 degrees less than the main angle

Hi,

I always hone HSS before use, but I've never really put that much thought into it. Figure 8's on the flanks and best I can on the top.

Just like a woodworking tool Mike, you have a grinding angle and a honing angle. I generally just give the edges a rub the best I can, if you hollow grind the bit the stone will only hit the cutting edge and bottom edge.
