Hi , can anyone tell me what the J3/J6/J33 refers to when ordering a Morse Taper shaft to fit a drill chuck to my MT3 tailstock?

Hi,
It's the taper that goes into the back of the chuck. The chuck should have a taper listed. They are not just j numbers, I know my mill chuck is a b16.

the J3 etc (sometimes JT3 etc) are "Jacobs Taper", mostly found on drill chucks made in America (or made for use in the North American market). The B16 etc tapers are German DIN standard, and mostly found on chucks made in (or for use in) metric countries. Clean the male anf female tapers very carefully before putting together. Chris

For some reason, JT33 is a popular size in the USA but not so much here.
I imported a chuck for my Walker-Turner drill press, which has a JT33 fitting on the end of the spindle. Price here was sky high - due to scarcity I suppose.

OK thanks for the replies, just to clarify, the J number is the end of the shaft that fits into the chuck not the end that fits the morse taper?
