I recently bought a bunch of books from an estate. One was Creative Woodturning by Dale Nish, published in 1975 by Brigham Young University Press.
Creative Woodturning: Dale L. Nish: 9780842504690: Amazon.com: Books (http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Woodturning-Dale-L-Nish/dp/0842504699)
Nearly six hundred photographs accompany the text to clarify the operation of the wood lathe and its use for specific projects.
History (http://www.utahwoodturning.com/about/history)
It is full of tips and step by step photos covering turning. As it is written before 4 jaw scroll chucks he shows how to do without.
This would be handy for those saving up for the chuck, but still wanting to make bowls or plates.
Your library may have it or used book sellers.
I highly recommend it.
