As some of you know i left the Melbourne show and headed towards Mareeba to visit Powderpost before heading south to Proserpine.

I should be getting close by now but a fractured injector line on the beast has stopped me in Barcaldine for 3 days.

It has been 1 day and am bored stupid so if any forumites live round this area and want to play, give me a call on 0428 983 614.:D

Is this "Beast" the same one you changed the injector lines on the other week end that made you remember why you took up wood turning?

AH Barcaldine! Its along way from Prosapine. Is Queensland giving you a dose of sunshine you would not have?
If its not hot its flamin cold.

Hope you are back on the road soon. (Drive safely)

Its not until you get away from the big smoke that you realise just how BIG Australia is.

When I was working we had an over night service with Laminex. There is a branch in Tamworth, that has a pretty good stock but inevitably you would ask for something that was not in stock and so they would "Get it up overnight"

Customers away from Tamworth would experience "over night service" that would take 2 days. Thats just how it worked. Now you are in Barcaldine, its a reasonably big centre, but Overnight to them is probably where your 3 day stay is coming from.

Laminex had a meeting of all branch managers from all over Australia. They asked the Darwin manager to give a talk on his experiences with the company from his angle. His "Over night Service" took a week!!! Its not until you drive to Darwin that you realise just how far away it is. They are closer to Indonesia than they are to Sydney or Melbourne

The beer will be cold.

Enjoy your stay

Barcaldine = Middle of Nowhere!

Although the Queensland Tourist site has Barcaldine as a centre for
Activities

Birdwatching . . . Wrong type of Birds
Camping . . . That's what the Beast is for
Fishing . . . Lagoon Creek is close to town, please don't use the concussion method to fish, it upsets the locals
Golfing . . . Mark Twain had it right, Golf is a good walk, spoiled.
Off Road Driving . . . Gotta have a vehicle that's not sick.
Shopping . . . maybe pick up a new round neck t shirt and spend the nights adjusting them with scissors, not a skew.

Have a rest and drink plenty of warm coke and tea.

The last time I was barcaldine was 17 years ago, I can remember leaving tyre marks in the tarmack it was that hot the bikes tyres stuck to the road. Stayed the night in the local. Carn't remeber much after fifth round. Don't worry to much its only a short drive to emerald and the on to mackay. Just lay back and enjoy the drive.

To answer all your questions.

Yes, it is warm.

Yes it is the one that dented the knuckles.

The problem is that the part is in, wait for it, Melbourne and they do not air freight. Brisbane to Barcy- air freight.

I could have broken down in a worse place I suppose.

There is more to this story: One of the original rusted through on the way back from Sydney show. Not one to do things by halves I replaced them all.

3 I could buy as original equipment and was told that there were no others available in the world. "they don't make em for that older vehicle any more. You were lucky to get those." Yeah right.

So I had 3 made and they are the ones giving trouble. One on the way back from Canberra show. The same one now.

Andrew (mechanic in Barcy) gets on phone. 2 hours later his supplier rings back and says "how many you want?" but the catch is they are in Melbourne. Bummer.

FF, a nice drive for me.:D

I am amazed all the Knowledge you could be getting there after all its historical significance might inspire.

Panoramio - Photo of Barcaldine The Tree of Knowledge May 2010 (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/36059672)

The ghost gum, Eucalyptus Papuana, which grew outside the Railway Station, earned its claim to fame as the founding site of the political movement we now know as the Australian Labor Party. In 1891 Barcaldine was the centre for the striking shearers during the “Great Shearers Strike” when they met under its boughs. In May 1891, about 3000 striking shearers marched under the “Eureka” flag to put forward their protests against poor working conditions and low wages. Because the area beneath the Tree of Knowledge was the scene of actions and decisions which had a profound effect on the future of labour and politics in Australia, it has become an icon of the Labor Party and Trade Unions.

Cliff Rogers
24th October 2012, 01:16 PM
It is dead.

In 1991, the tree was found to be suffering from dieback. In an act of vandalism, the tree was poisoned with glyphosate (a main ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp) in 2006. An arborist declared the tree dead on 3 October 2006. The ALP offered a reward of A$10,000 for any information that will help identify those responsible

The remains of the tree were removed on 29 July 2007. According to a Queensland Government release the tree is undergoing a process of wood preservation and the remains of the tree - 7 metres tall and 2 across - are being transferred to a special preservation facility.

Beware of sleepers. They're likely to have asbestos fibres about them from the old brake linings. Old = pre-2003.

Reading is good. Ebook readers especially. Light; load them up with lots of books before heading out; batteries last a long time. If you run out of stuff, load up the latest bestest over the 'net or 3G. File sizes with epub format aren't big. And there's all the out-of-copyright stuff free from Project Gutenberg and elsewhere.

The centre bolts in springs can break at any time particularly given the the fact that this vehicle has been on some pretty rugged roads. Normal wear and tear for a 30 year old vehicle.

The lines that are giving trouble are ones that were made, not OEM.

You will not find a lathe in my place that is under 15 years old (except Henry who is 12) so the answer to your question is yes. The only real innovation to lathes is variable speed but even that is not new as some lathes were fitted with that 100 years ago. It has just become more affordable for most people.

Tools on the other hand have come forward in leaps and bounds due to better steels but gimmick tools IMHO are just that, gimmicks.

For most people a good set of tools will last a lifetime. They just have to learn how to sharpen them and use them properly.

Excuses excuses .............yep I know all of what has happened to the old girl can and has happened to an almost new vehicle or 3 terrible when its under warranty and the boss :((.

Usually time to check over things though when pipes start breaking and leaking you have to consider other motorists and slippery road conditions it can cause especially for those fellows on 2 wheels traction ain't what it used to be.

I am wondering though why it could not be sourced from anywhere else even a wreckers, might be time to carry some bundy tube and olives.

His phone only makes phone calls !!!!!!! :oo: :oo: :oo: :oo: :oo:

Robo me awd mate, you have just gone up 1000% in my estimation. I thought that I was the only one left that actually just used the phone to phone people??????

I do have a camera that takes superb photos, but has no way to talk to anyone on the phone and I have a mobile phone that makes good phone calls, I think there is a camera on it, but people can't hear me when try to photograph a phone call to them. Strange that really:?

Soon be Monday for you lot down there now, so I wait with brated beath, or sunfin like that, to hear that you are on your way to the next breakdown, sorry, stop!!

As a matter of interest, our clocks went back an hour last night so that it stays early an hour later, but it does get late earlier until around late December where it starts to stay earlier later again. My brain is starting to 'urt!

You're not the only one. :2tsup:

My mobile serves me so I only use it to make calls when I'm out. When at home it lies on my bedside table waiting for when I go out.

Also only 2 people know the number, and know to call me only when it's urgent, and I'm out.
