I need a lathe Dr help plz!

Hey all turned my nova 1624-44 on today first time in about 4 weeks
I did a bit of turning and turned it of had lunch then turned the lathe back on to the lathe going in reverse
I turned it off checked it over the switch was turned to fwd turned the lathe on and still it went in reverse

after a call to Jim at cws who told me to give the Carba tec wa call ,carba tec was of little help
I did a little thinking and I think it's the switch that turns it from forward to reserve

after a cup of tea and a think I called Dr in his Melbourne office who was the most help
and confirmed it it seams as it may be a wiring problem

so given the Dr is out of state can anyone out there in sydney stop past my shop and have a look and see if we can get it sorted ? As I know nothing about wiring and motors

plz I have stuff I have to get finished for xmass for SWMBO

Dave this is so easy a fix.

Just stand at the other side and turn from that side:doh: at least you can finish it off.

Dave why not ring Ozartisan whom you bought it off he may have a simple fix/solution. Trend is also not far away and they may know of a fix also.

Ozartisan just said it sounds like job for elec as something as simple as a switch maybe wrong or a short so be damn careful

I have the same lathe and turn it on in reverse because I'm left handed, only for those hard to do projects mind you. Worth a thought, to get things done in the mean time, you could turn with the lathe in reverse and stand on the other side. Just make sure you apply the tool to the opposite side of the work.

Turning in reverse, as per Scott and Ray, is fine BUT don't forget to use a locking collar as the chuck may remove itself from the headstock as it unwinds due to the RH thread!!!! Can make a mess of the job AND you.

As for the switch, I'm assuming (?) the lathe is 3 phase. The switch swaps 2 phases to make the motor go in reverse. If this is the case, and you know someone close by, they may be able to swap some wires to get you out of trouble for now so you can finish the job. Otherwise, it sounds like an electronics problem rather than the switch.

Is it still under warranty? Tampering would of course void that.

Definitely sounds like a wiring problem. If it was working previously, then the wires are around the right way, but sounds like you have a short somewhere. Unplug the lathe and start pulling things apart to see what could be causing problem. Start with the switch, could be moisture or sawdust, or even ants that have moved in (their eggs transfer current). Blow them out with compressed air and see how you go. If not fixed, work your way around all the connections. If still not good, time to visit an electrician.

Hi Dave,
Not knowing the lathe I thought it may be EVS with 3 phase motor, but was told by that it isn't, so as Dai Sensai says, I'd be looking at the switch. If it just reverses by swapping field windings then it should be a relatively simple fix.

Ok update
After a call to a mate with the same lath nova 1624-44 it seams that some of them at a switch problem
looks like I have one

I have a sparky looking at it late today
I'm hope he knows more them me lol

teknatool is now USA not NZ so if you look for a nz number on there website you will be there for days

Little up date had it looked at to day had it hit whith compressed air
the wires were checked so was the switch it seams to be going ok I will know when I give it a workout
