Four words: "Making & Mastering Wood Planes" by David Finck. Published by sterling, ISBN 0-8069-6163-5. Got my copy thru special order at DYMOCKS (SA). One of THE BEST books ever written on woodworking full-stop. Alos try "The Fine Art of Cabinet Making" by master woodworker, ultimate guru and my hero James Krenov. He teaches at the ultimate woodworkers scholl in the US and they have a web site with a free downloadable short essay on plane making check out www.crfinefurniture.com (http://www.crfinefurniture.com) and you'll find it easily with a bit of surfing. This is a good article but still leaves a few questions. You will not have any questions after reading David Finck (want to know haw to fine tune a combination square, make your own adjusting hammer for wood planes or get a truly sharp edge on tools with only a hand grider and two Japanese water stones ?? yes?? then get this book NOW)
