Just love this rain, I get to do some shed time. Found a block of gidgee and wanted to try chasing some threads. It cut beautifully. Also, for the first time, tried cutting pearl shell to make some "buttons" for the lids, even that turned out ok. The gidgee was a bit firm,, and was much better to use a scraping technique rather than try to cut.
These are all 70mm diameter and vary from 70mm to 40mm high. Finish is Ubeaut glow.

So nice to see you have moved past the firewood pile at last :2tsup:
Interesting that it cuts a thread, thought it would chip out, must throw some on and retry that spiraling tool again,
nice work as usual Jimmy,
rgds,

Remind me never to play lawn bowls with you... it ain't fair using ones with flat bottoms! :innocent:

The MOP inlays set them off nicely; did you just silicone them in?

Smiife, they were sanded up to 1200#, then EEE, then the glow was applied thinly with a piece of flannelette with the lathe stationary. With the lathe at speed, the wet part of the cloth was applied with pressure. Keep the cloth moving.

Jim, They are really good looking boxes, and it is good to know that others use Shellawax. I love the "Glow"

I've not tried Gidgee, but Mulga and Jam are pretty tight as well. Also that Ironwood from Alice Sp. is pretty hard.

Bob.

Thanks Bob, I have used jam and iron wood, the are both good for chasing threads. I don't have any mulga so I can't comment.

Cliffie, I am interested also, but from memory you only have small trees on your place?

This one was more that 2' across the base but only the outer 4" of it is any good & that is why it blew over.
I've saved some from higher up the tree.
I should get some bowl blanks 12" to 14" across & around 5" to 6" deep.
I already have some 5" square billets about 18" long.

You didn't get across the other side of the creek, there are a few over there but not any size that a mill would be interested in.
