I have been using this website to get some inspiration and some good info over the last several months since i started wood turning.
I began as I wanted to make myself a chess set and bought a lathe and tried to self teach myself. Since then ive turned several bowls, a couple of segmented bowls, a pepper grinder and a chess set.
Its a great website and good info that people are always trying to help out new people.

Anyway, here is my chess set that I thought would take a couple of weekend but ended up taking 6 months (much time was trying to find more of the right wood).

Its dark and light maple with maple board.

That is very impressive! You put a lot of love into that set. It'll become an heirloom. :U

The ball-bearing base weight is a clever idea.

Love the WiP, thanks for posting.

Ah, yeah. Darn. I thought it was a bearing, too, and was wondering it it'd work to hold the pieces in-place on a large travel board.

Way back when I first joined a turning club, one of the first group projects was a chess set.

As there weren't enough members for one piece each, every-one was asked which two pieces they wanted to do and identical templates were handed out. After a month or two when pieces were due in, some of us had to put our hands up to turn a few more.

The end result? A horrible mish-mash. It's amazing how liberal some people can be, even when given full plans with dimensions and templates. It was auctioned off and some generous person took the monstrosity home.

Me? I'm cured of chess sets. :D But that doesn't mean I can't admire someone who has the persistence to make something as gorgeous as yours... well done! :2tsup:

You have progressed well in advance of me for sure. I have never even thought of doing anything like that.

That will be a treasured family set for sure.

Mostly a few different pieces maybe 4-6 per day just to keep it interesting. The pawns were a bit boring :D I am pretty happy with how similar they look, there are a few a bit longer/shorter in small ball on the head but it gives it some character :P

That sounds very fun and would be a really cool chess set although maybe a bit difficult to play on! :D

Fantastic job so early in your turning journey :2tsup::2tsup: Wanting to make a chess set was one of the reasons I first started turning also - but 12 years later I still haven't got around to it :B
