If you do a search in the

HOMEMADE TOOLS AND JIGS ETC. (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f44/)

Forum that should reveal a few and it will save folks reposting stuff that has already being posted.

And thanks Bob! Pretty new around here and didn't realise there was a dedicated section, off to have a little looksy! Cheers, Max.

skews, scrapers and parting tools! I used boliert S600 and Mcjings tool steel! oh and a power hacksaw blade for the thinest parting tool!

I recently bought a decorating elf, but instead of spending the $50+ on the coving and point tools, I made my own from a couple of Gary Pye HSS blanks (~$12 total).

I just realized you referred to Turning Chisels. In that case you are much more likely to find these in the "Woodturning - General" Forum.

Is the elf just a length of steel with a hole drilled in the end and then you slide a carbide burr into the hole ?

It's got ball bearings and a magnet in there as well, but fundamentally yes. The burrs are HSS, not carbide, as far as I can tell.
