Quilted Huon Pine platter

Hi everyone. Here is a quilted huon pine platter I made last weekend.
My new scraper from CWS is doing a great job so far, and makes such a difference! Sanded from 240 to 600, then EEE then UBeaut Shellawax Glow polish. I didn't put any EEE or polish inside the recess. Firstly because when I get around to signing it, I think it would go better on raw timber rather than polished. Secondly, I just can't bring myself to completely cover the beautiful natural scent of Huon Pine with a polish which might mask the smell.

275mm diameter x 35mm height at edge of rim (highest point). There was a cool knot in it, which ended up in the side of the platter. I liked it, so didn't want to cut it out or reduce the overall diameter. Plenty of small cracks (can see on left hand side of photo of the base), but nothing that some medium and thin CA couldn't take care of.

This is still fairly new for me, so comments and critique are very welcome.

That is a darn nice job, especially if you are fairly new to woodturning.
Huon Pine is a really special timber, and you have done this piece proud.
A nice shape and a really nice finish, a great result.

Huon Pine can be pretty bland, but not when it looks like this. You've done it justice. Well done.

Nice work Simon, I haven't had much experience turning Huon but when I have I've found it really sweet to work with.
Now I just need to find a nice looking piece like that one.:U

hi simon,
very nice platter,i like the shape of the top,but was disappointed
with the bottom side,it would look better i think if you followed
the contour/shape of the top ,not trying to knock what you have done
just that you have asked for c&c and thats my 2 bob's worth,

Hi smiife thanks for the honest feedback I appreciate it.
After I turned the top I had a similar thought and I at least wanted to re-turn the base to remove the recess. But the bowl is about 11.5 inches and I only have a midi lathe with a 12" swing, so even if I used my cole jaws with modified timber jaws for extra length, it wouldn't fit on my lathe. So for these large platters omce I have turned the base and turned it around, I'm stuck with the shape.
