Hi all, this was given to me to turn, only info was that it might be a root of some sort? Thanks to pommyphil who knew it was a ligno-tuber of some sort. It turned great and it's got some nice figure in it. The tuber was about 10' x 6" and the finished vase measures 5" x 3 3/4". Cheers Harry

Nice, I like roots and stumps for the spectacular figure.

It is a gall (Gall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall)). Beautiful colour variations in them, although usually contain many hollows, where resin comes in handy .

Off what tree, good question, one with a yellowish timber

Well I know what it isn't. It isn't Jarrah, or WA Peppermint because it is too light in colour.
Below is a bowl turned from a WA Peppermint ( Agonis flexuosa) Lignotubers & boy is it hard. I spent nearly as much time on the grinder as I did on the lathe when I turned this.
