In Mike Darlow's DVD he uses a wide, very shallow fluted gouge for finishing the outside of a bowl. He called it a 'shallow hybrid gouge.' The finish, off the tool, was very good.
A Google search on that name yields no hits. Is anyone familiar with the use of that tool and if I wanted to order one what would I be asking for.

In Mike Darlow's DVD he uses a wide, very shallow fluted gouge ....or.From your brief description I think you are talking of a variety of spindle gouge. If you go to the site of Crown Hand Tools :
http://www.crownhandtools.ltd.uk/products/spindlegouges.asp
look at the number 2325. I think it might be the tool you are looking for.<O:p</O:p

The one Mike was using had a bevel like a scraper and looked to be a thicker chisel. But it is very similar in shape. Thanks for that.

Could have been, or inspired by, a 'continental' spindle gouge. This is forged rather than ground and has an even thickness.

Edit: see gouges, continental style, at http://www.robert-sorby.co.uk/

I have one in carbon steel. Good to use but needs frequent sharpening of course.

Was it like this?

It's on his Practice of Woodturning DVD not on the website.
