Gidgee natural edge lamp

Hi everyone,

After my first attempt at a lamp turned out pretty nice, I thought I would try something a little different. I created this one out of a chunk of gidgee. Very simple shape, to highlight the varying colours of the gidgee from the bark, to the light colour just under the surface, then the dark centre timber.

It nearly killed my tools - the gidgee was hard as a rock!

Interesting

and I like the variation in the timber

But can I see tool marks or sanding marks running around the base?
If so I'd suggest a little 'with the grain' sanding before applying a finish

Yes nick there are some ring lines on it. I believe these came in during sanding. This was my first natural edge piece and it was more of a "what if" kind of job. I will be getting some more natural chunks like this of gidgee and other timbers, and will hopefully get them up to a sellable standard.

What tool brand were you using?

What speed were you turning?

Did you use a skew to plane the piece or what tool did you last use for your finishing cut?

I think it was about 1000rpm. Finishing cuts were made with a woodcut negative rake scraper.
