I am going to Brisbane next week traveling up the Newell and then home via the coast to Sydney and Canberra.

If a club, individual or maybe a group of Forumites would like to spend a day or evening to pick up some pointers on turning I would only be too happy to oblige.

My route is not set in stone and I can alter to suit.

The weekend of 23rd and 24th is taken up at the moment.

Hell, thought at first this was a thread about finally loosing the plot and being committed for giving away all the big stuff and retiring to a mini lathe to just turn pens all the while yelling at the top of his voice, "this is fun, this is fun, this fun". So happy to see it hasnt happened......................yet :)

Good stuph! Here's to hoping we catch up with you on your "Sydney transit." :)

I'd offer up here as a potential stop-over, 'cept I imagine that between recovering the more... 'enthusiastic' members from the bottom of the hill and avoiding the swirling flocks of Rosellas incensed by intruders at their feeding stations there wouldn't be much demonstrating achieved. :-

Mind you, our door is always open should you - or other forum members - wanna drop in for a cuppa.

Oh... and Dave? You should know that there is always something new to learn. It's just that some of us need to go to 'special' school. :D

I'm on the Newell. Would love a visit and some pointers. I could put the word out toy club and see if anyone else is available and wants to come.

One club member is a high school teacher and may even be able to stir up some of his students for a visit.

Club meets Friday 29th Nov but I'm happy to make myself and property available anytime. I can probably get use of the club venue too. I'm in Jerilderie club venue in Finley

I was going to email you all and offer to do it at my place (plus beer and dinner, etc) but if there's a goddam test involved...man o man am I going to fail that one!

Being honest, there hasn't been much time on the tools and my progress has been slow...though if I have until the 22nd or so.....it might give me time to pull the finger out!

When passing through Canberra, your welcome to join us at the Hall Mens shed for morning tea. We are open from 10:00 to 12:30ish on Thursday mornings. :UYou may be able to give us some advice on our set-up. The associated museum is also open on Thursday morning. Neil and DaveTTC have visited us, and can give you a headsup on our shed and museum. Neil included some great panoramic shots of the museum. Dave gave an excellent account of our 100 year old carpenters workbench. He was also going to do a similar discussion of our museum of old trades and tools but obviously ran out of time with his other commitments.

If it comes off and Armidale is within your sights.....sing out and I could come up....being as close as that, I would make the trip. Just to catch up.....and show me where I am going wrong.

PS Here is a thought....my brother lives in Armidale and he has only ever used a metal work lathe. If you were up for a challenge you could show him the basics. By the way he's left handed. Hence the challenge

Intended itinerary for week 2. This may be altered depending on requests.

Leave Gold coast on Monday and amble down Pacific Hwy visiting some friends to Ozartisans place.

From there across to Smiifes place at Armidale for the weekend session.

Then down to Sydney via Scone. More details next week.

At least it's not rings as the engine warms up, as the result of that blow-by is increase fuel and thus engine rpm.....
can be quite scary while driving down the highway at 90-100kph to suddenly increase speed as you let the foot off the pedal.....

(I didn't realise we'd taken up so much of your time until I got home - 9 hours.)

I really enjoyed the day and came away knowing heaps more and feeling much more confident in my turning, after a full day of demos and guided hands-on. I just need to go hard at it for a few days and practice all of the new moves while they're fresh in my mind. I know what to do - just have to get used to actually doing it. I already did a quick hour's practice as soon as I got home.

Charlie, thank you for hosting the day at your place, and for making us feel so welcome. :2tsup:Your shed is miles ahead of my little one-car-garage workshop, both in space and equipment. Great lathe collection, too.

I didn't realise you got some shots of me playing with the bowl blank and spindles.
I usually avoid being at the pointy end of cameras. I'm not much of a photographer, but I'm still much better behind the camera than in front. :D

Now I know what you look like Steve! LOL

I got home last Friday after doing 8000 Km's and seeing most of NSW by meandering backward and forward.

Thank you to everybody that invited me around to their workshops and their homes. I had a great time and learnt some interesting things and it reinforced the mateship amongst the Woodturning fraternity.:2tsup:

Thank you . :clap::clap::clap:

Your generosity, both with your time and expertise, is unequalled.
I had a great day when you stopped off here in Nowra and came away knowing far, far more than I did beforehand, (which was nothing).

Been getting in as much practice as possible, too. Gonna be a long road, but I'm enjoying it.

I only loaded the computer today with a few shots of the Demo at Michael "smiffe" place. I was surprised that there were only 3 of us for to "demo" on. It did mean that we all got a real good go on the lathe using the methods that discussed. My brother had never used a wood lathe at all until that Saturday. He has some experience using metal Lathes though.
's style of teaching is a gift that he freely gives. As the photos show he has a real "hands on manner". The discussions were wide ranging while we drank tea and coffee the after lunch dave opened the bar for a couple of sherbets. Michael's wife kept away during the dusty part of the proceedings but was a great host as well.

Please excuse the layout of the photos, I would have liked to put proper captions under but I have hit the limit of my computer savvy
Basically the photos are of Michael and his wife, then Michael doing a spindle, then my brother Peter on a bowl, then answering a question.
It was agreat day and we are all grateful for taking the time to drop in.
