Guys,
I am looking for some help. I have this great little piece of Gidgee that I am trying to make a small bowl from.

the problem I am having is finishing it. I am getting small tears in the grain when turning against the grain. I tried to sand it but I ended up with a polished surface but the tears were still there. I have tried scrapers and sharp tools but I still can't get it to a satisfactory finish.

What do I do with it?

Thanks,
Russ

Hi Russ
Some of the Gidgee is quite course and brittle and chips away when you scrape or sand it. You could try a
coat of some type of filler before polishing to fill the grain. Good luck

You could always bring it down to the forum get together down on the Gold Coast on the weekend. Otherwise, high angle shear scrape with very sharp chisel then work through the grits again, but ensure you get out the tear out when you start with the course grits.

................ high angle shear scrape with very sharp chisel then work through the grits again...................Absolutely! Gidgee responds very well to this treatment :2tsup:
