Am I the first ??
Or should I say Michael (Grommett)

Michael was very quick of the mark !! and I had the pleasure of coming home from being interstate to a parcel that was not expected this quick so well done Michael :2tsup:
My two pen swaps are sort of underway and should be done and posted very soon but I will keep you posted.

So here we are with a photo of my pen swap from Michael.
Snr Gent placed in a nice blue velvet draw string pouch and dressed in Mango. I am sure Michael will share with us the finish he placed on this fine piece of timber.
some very nice spalted blanks and a nice piece of Yew and spalted oak. I am sure these are going to make some treasured pens ;-)
Feel free to fill in any gaps Michael and very much appreciated :-)

Thanks
Tony.

The mango was from Chris, Mapleman. The finish is Shellawax over a CA sealer. I like the challenge Of a Snr Gent, Its the top barrel that tests.

Hoping my stuff is well on the way(maybe delivered?) to my pen swap partner!
I did receive mine. And I took a few photo's of it, with the bonus blanks that accompanied the parcel. I must say, you have 'down played' your abilities...this is not something that comes from a 'beginner'....I couldn't find a sanding mark on it anywhere...great attention to detail!

Not one wants to read my ramblings....photo's rule!!
First one is just a shot of the pen resting in its presentation box.

Laying on top!

And finally, laying amongst the 'bounty' of nice blanks...that I will enjoy turning once it warms up a bit around here.

Hi Grommett and Merril,

Just to let you know that my part of the Aus Pen swap for 2014 has now been finished and packed and will be on its way via Aus Express Post tomorrow morning :2tsup:
Keep an eye out for the postman in the next couple of days and I hope you both like them.
In my haste to get them packed and addressed I forgot to put my little hand written notes in each parcel. Not to worry I am sure we can all work out what is what when they arrive. :D

Cheers & Thanks and I look forward to seeing your photos posted ;-)

My two packages are winging the ways to their respective destinations.

The pen from tdrumnut has arrived along with some very nice blanks :2tsup: The pen is a Gunmetal Vertex dressed in Spalted Olivewood. This is the first one of these I've handled and I'm very impressed with the mechanism. I think I will be adding a few of them to my next order when the time comes :). There was one more blank in the package (Honduran Rosewood) but a guest has decided it would make a very nice pen for him to make so it's been cut, drilled & is waiting for the glue to cure now :D

My Australian Partner was Sawdust Maker, and my package arrived today. The pen is a Sedona wrapped in Mackay Cedar and finished with a perfect CA finish. As we all know, in most cases, pictures don't do our pens justice. And this is no exception. The pen looks like it's in a 3D movie.

He also sent along several blanks. The most interesting to me is the Huron Pine. To be honest, I'd never understood all the fuss about this timber. I mean it looks similar to most other pine. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. I can't wait to make something with this blank.

Thanks Nick!!

No problems
You were lucky to get that bit of huon - I looked at it and thought "ooh, that's pretty, should I keep it?"

oh and the finish on the Mackay Cedar is the two part Rustins - link here (http://www.rustins.com.au/rustins/rustinsplasticcoating%20p1.htm)

Michael,

Glad you recived it ok and pleased that you like it :2tsup:
With regards to the blanks to be honest I am not 100% sure exactly what they all are other than the cast blank which was one of my own castings which is a bits and pieces casting. I think the timber blanks are New Guinea Rosewood Burl and QLD Maple but not sure what the others are ? so might need some input from others or Mapleman here :-)

Thought I would share a couple of photos I took prior to sending the parcel to Michael.

Thanks

I partnered with David Mitchell and the package was sent about two weeks ago by what I can see from the reminder notice in the post office box. I got back from holidays and I must say what an excellent surprise.

Not only was there a nice pen in there for me, a Tycoon with a blank by Mrs PTownSubbie, but also a bracelet helper for Mrs Big Shed:2tsup: A very nice touch I thought.

Also received some nice blanks.

My parcel to Peter was sent last Friday, some delay experienced because of the really hot spell we had for a while.

Here are the pics from my swap with Ben aka Beedeejay, a beautiful JR Gent dressed in an orange (he went to the trouble of finding out my favorite colour) and worthless wood blank. Also some cool blanks & scrap burls to play with. Ben also found out that I was dabbling in box making and gave me some nicely figured camphor laurel boards to make boxes with "simply awesome". Thats my swap for this year completed and I have had two great swap partners in Ben & Andrew aka Corbs and could not be happier.

Keeping with the spirit of the swap, Bob and I did do our swap here. I gave mine to him while at the Februaury IAP Chapter Meeting, and his came home with my wife while he was dropping off blanks for the website. I think I received the better end of this deal!

Scott (hope he can't get this close on mine) BHmm, That's funny because I do remember a few flaws. And the light wood is Acacia with walnut scallops and accents. The finial & green rings are alumilite. For some reason the finial turned out darker than I thought it would. But I'm glad you liked it Scott. You knew you were getting a custom finial, right?!?!?

And I thought I would follow up with Scott's pen he made for me. It's Hemlock cones cast in PR. When I 1st saw the pen, I thought he'd come up with a new way of swirling resin. There is so much movement with the colors swirling around the cones. The 3D effect is awesome, and something pictures just won't show. But I'll try anyway.

Hi All,

Firstly, Sorry Trev, I received my swap weeks ago but i only just got round to taking photos of my score,

Secondly, I Received my swap parcel from Michigan Mike on my birthday (4th of March) but I haven't opened it yet as i am waiting until I send my parcel to him, which should be Monday as i had encountered a few small problems but that will be sorted this weekend

So now back to my score from Trev,

The pen is a gold vertex clicker wrapped in a beautifully finished piece of myrtle burl,

and the rest of my score is some awesome blanks, some of which have given me a bit of a push to hurry up and start casting :D Especially the couple of wormy/borer hole filled NGR and what i think was forest redgum
some of the other timbers are, Banksia, English Elm, Bubinga, Marri Paperbark, New Guinea Rosewood - Burl and Figured,

Trev also included one of his own cast blanks, and then while we were touring his shed he gave me a liquid amber pod cast blank he had done as well

307834307835307836307837:D:D

Again thank you Trev,

I have recieved a great Pen and a good new friend in the process,

Cheers Ben

That is the main reason I decided to do the swap again,
We have pairings from all over the world and both this year and last year I was lucky enough to have one of my swap partners live less then an hours drive away and we had the chance to catch up in person, which I really enjoyed,
thanks again to Scott and his helpers for organizing ,
cheers Ben

Dave I am glad that you liked the pens. Yes the finish is CA. I liked the history of the American Chestnut tree I hope you have had the time to read up on it. Made a really nice pen. The swap was awesome and I look forward to receiving your parcel.

Thanks again,

Well it actually arrived two weeks ago. I was very pleased to see the contents of the package that Edgar sent me. One could only dream of having some of this timber on land that you owned. I even got some Durlin rods to make bushings for doing CA finish. He sent me a beautiful pen made from Mesquite. I wish my pictures were half as good as the actual pen. Thank you for all of the extras. Have a great day all.

Pleased you like the pen, the timber came from Western Queensland, the gatherer said it was Dead Finish, whereas the "guru's" at Wyong, NSW said Purple Gidgii.

Robert glad you like them. Great to hear they arrived safely.

Those pens have a story and are a limited resource. Ned Kelly, a notorious bush ranger once wanted to write his side of the story of how he ended up where he was.

A little Ned Kelly & Jerilderie history.

Situated in the Main Street of Jerilderie the building that served as a residence also housed the printing press for the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette. Steeped in history this building is most well known for its association with the Kelly Gang

Jerilderie's printing press was one of the prime attractions thar bought the Kelly Gang to the town, as it would enable them to print the 7,500 word letter (later known as the Jerilderie Letter) that Ned had dictated to fellow gang member Joe Byrne.

Ned Kelly and his gang held the town up over 3 days as he was in Jerilderie from 8th - 10th February 1879. When Ned attended the printery Samuel Gill the then editor and printer was absent so his letter was left with bank accountant Edwin Living to hand on for printing. This never happened in Ned's life time.

In recent years the Jerilderie Shire had the building renovated and repaired. As part of this some of the original floor was pulled up and replaced. This old floor which was essentially sitting on the ground. The Murray Pine boards were rescued from the local tip so a little of Kelly history can live on.

Amos I am floored.

The box has arrived. The wood on that pen is fantastic, what is it? I already have a kit planned for the extra blank you sent.
The nib section and custom jewels look great. Did you make the metal portion of the section, as well as the wood overlay?
The engraved box is a beautiful addition and the crests put it front and center of my collection.
When I get home, I will take some pictures and get them posted.

I was finally able to get some photos taken.

The fit and finish of this pen is excellent. I hope everyone can see quality of the work in my photos, I am definitely not a pro photographer. I'm still waiting to hear from Amos about the wood, but I think its incredible.

The box is a beautiful added touch. I retired from the Canadian Army, after 26 years service. The horse image on the left was my branch, Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME Rats). The right is my trade badge as Sgt. Weapons Technician (Gun Plumber).

I am honoured by this new center piece of my collection.

Once again Amos, thank you for making my first Aussie Pen Swap such a memorable experience.

Hello Darrin, glad you liked it, although it does need some improvement. The timber is Tasmanian Maple Burl, it needed stabilising and even while turning it needed more stabilising, it has a great grain but very porous in nature, the kit is a Majestic. Amos

I got Robert's pen several weeks ago, but I just finally got around to shooting & uploading pictures.

The pen is an awesome Hawaiian Koa on an elegant cigar. Beautifully done, Robert - the fit and finish are awesome. Thanks also for giving me some hints on how I can improve my finishes.

Robert also sent an amazing medium flat rate box full of goodies. Lots of Hawaiian pen blanks, a couple of big chunks of buckeye burl, some cholla cactus, some corian, and a whole bunch of chopsticks. It's amazing the uses you can find for chopsticks in a woodshop.

Thanks Robert - you really outdid yourself and this is a pen that I will treasure.

Thanks Stuart - I really enjoyed our chats. It's nice to get to know someone from around the world and even nicer to have a pen from Australia in my collection.

Well I have not been on the forum or spending much if any time in the shed due to some personal issues. Due to this I have been running late very late completing my swaps. Thankfully my swap partners have been understanding around my circumstances.

I received my pen and some extra's from Mr Vic a few weeks ago but it has unfortunately been damaged in transit. The damage appears to be the result of the package being dropped on its end. It is a shame as it is a fine looking pen.

Pics here 312854312855

The pen included some timbers new to me that I will have fun using, Persimon, African Mahogany, Birdseye Maple, TRex (teeth not included), Flamin Box Elder & Tiger Wood.
312852312853

Today I posted out the Pen I have made and some extra's for Mr Vic and returned the pen he made so he has the opportunity to repair the damage.

I did converse with Vic (email) about the damage and he advised that it should be brought up on the forum as a warning to all to ensure you package your pens carefully when posting to hopefully avoid any damage.

I have partially completed my other pen swap for mick61 and will endeavour to have it fully completed and posted next week.

Thanks to all for understanding.

I'll be keeping an eye out for the package Shawn. The post office left me a notice for last years swap package. Since it went throught customs they required a signature. When I drove over to sign and pick it up they couldn't find it. I raise holly bejesus and the Post Master personally delivered it to the house.

I'll have to dissasemble, sand off the CA and then refinish the pen. I'll make darn sure to over package it for the return trip.

Glad to announce I received my swap pens with goodies from Joanne (josquiggley) last Monday and Shawn (Mach70) on Tuesday. I didn't get to my shop to photo them as it was about 20 degrees, snowing and I have no Insulation in my shop. The relatives arrived...

Both pens are fountains and look awesome. The one from Shawn is a Pristina wrapped in "Gidee" if I read correctly. Jo didn't tell me what the wood is but the fittings look similar to the Pristina. I'll get some photos to post this week. Shawn’s damaged pen arrived back with out further damage... I'll be able to sand it down, refinish then send it back.

Thanks for the swap. By the way today it's in the 80s...Just got to love living in Colorado USA...
