Dear all,

I have a Hare and Forbes woodlathe, 900 b'w centres. When I am turning and wish to stop the work revolves until it comes to a dead stop which could take 30 secs or more. On some lathes I have seen a wheel which is attached to the headstock which can be grabbed and therefore slows the lathe down. I would like to put one on my lathe. The spindle hole in the headstock is about 12mm and there is no thread in it. I do need a small gap in there so I can feed a rod to eject the spur centre when it is stuck. I have thought about tapping a hole but not confident I can keep the drill perpendicular to the headstock. Any thoughts appreciated.

What you could do is to turn a wooden disk with a conical part that you would push gently into the spindle hole of the head stock.
prior to turning it you drill the hole you need to be able to insert the rod you use to eject the spur centre.
use hard wood with very good finish to prevent arming you.
