I am interested in turning ships capstans of various designs, I have a few designs from a ""Historic Ship Models" by Wolfram zu Mondfeld.
Any suggestions on timber type....walnut? meranti?...they will be four to six inches high and be working models....this may be a bit adventurous but I'll have a go..
Thanks

Why not use oak, after all that's probably what the originals were made of.

Just a thought.

Thanks Neil but the only problem with oak is the grain which is dominant....I think it may look "out of Scale"

Gooday.

You could try Merbau(Kwila). The originals could well have been teak and this would be a good match.

Turns well too.
