red cedar bowl

won a bit of red cedar in our club raffle, I turned it today came up ok!
couldn't turn Shape I had in mind due to defects!

300mm diameter and 65 thick from memory! finished with Scandinavian oil, yes there was a operator malfunction with the second bead on the rim!luckily there was a slight curve from bead to outside edge!

Looks good to me. If it had been a burl would you be worried about the "defects"?

Nice deep colour in the red cedar & looks like you did a pretty good job of it. Plenty of character in the timber.

I only worry about the defects that may cause it to let go! and fly away! :)

Always find it difficult to get a good finish on Red Cedar as it tends to get furry.
Best way seems to be to dampen it down and sand while damp.

thanks everyone! this one didn't go furry but I had freshly sharpened gouges and found my 50mm power sander so I popped it in the cordless drill just need finer grits in the Velcro backed pads!

Chuck, I find that I only have to sand with 120grit on the power sander and then use the inertia sander for 180 and higher.

If come across rolls of velcro back sandpaper and the correct punch, it will save some dollars and punching out the disks is a relaxing exercise after work.
